Spinn

An old colonial bungalow situated in a cul-de-sac in downtown Bangalore was the only remnant on a street once resplendent with such houses. Our brief was to restore and renovate the old house into a lounge bar and discotheque, retaining part or whole of the original structure.

The design incorporates two strong axes. The east-west axis interlinks the three distinct moods of Spinn, the calm courtyard, the chic lounge bar and the pulsating discotheque. Along the north-south axis is the double sided bar, which spatially connects the inner and outer areas.

The colonial shell of the bungalow was celebrated, while infusing an industrial retro–modern interior. Load bearing steel girders used to reinforce the structure were deliberately retained as a reminder of the process of repair and reconstruction. Glimpses of the rear façade of the old building act as a backdrop for the 25ft volume of the disco.

The juxtaposition between old and new, warm and cold, colonial and modern extends in many ways. The dramatic volume of the elegant Kerala tiled pitched roof with teakwood beams and rafters is highlighted by custom-designed contemporary chandeliers in acrylic and steel. Cold synthetic materials like white rexine , and coloured acrylic offset the original teak floors and hand dressed stone ceilings thus creating an exciting hybrid visual mix.
